Mount Rainier last erupted in about 1820, 1841-1843, 1854, 1879, and 1882. The lava type is two-pyroxene andesite. Mt. Rainier is an explosive volcano. It caused and will cause mudslides and avalanches when it erupts. Hot rock, lava, and ash will slide down the side of Mt. Rainier when the volcano erupts causing a great deal of damage. On certain days, you can smell the odor of sulfur in the air around the volcano. Sulfur is the main component in a volcanic eruption. The more sulfur, the more explosion.
